Charlize Theron Interview – Kubo and Two Strings – “Motherhood has changed my life”
Charlize Theron has that rare combination of brains, belligerence, and sheer, unassailable beauty. She’s as formidable in person as she is on screen, whether it’s playing the scheming Queen Ravenna in The Huntsman: Winter’s War or Furiosa, the one-armed female vigilante in Mad Max: Fury Road. What we love most perhaps about Theron is that she is an authentic female bad-ass.
Q: You’re best known for playing strong yet often flawed or even dark women. Are you drawn to the dark side of human nature?
THERON: I usually like to find roles where I can play women who are very different from my own personality. I’m not a dark or angry woman, but I often have a lot of fun playing villains or very tough characters. I also find it interesting to play women who are forced to fight for their survival. A lot of these women are also dysfunctional in some way and that’s the kind of thing that excites you as an actor.
