Helen Mirren Interview – Collateral Beauty – “I wanted Death to be the most alive character I’ve ever played”
There’s moment in Helen Mirren’s new film, Collateral Beauty where co-star Will Smith’s character describes her as an ‘elderly old lady.’ The star was not amused. “I could have wrung his neck,” she throatily chuckles, with a flash of literalness. “How dare he? A vulgar expression.”
Q: So you came around the idea of playing death?
MIRREN: Eventually [laughs]. And I very much engaged with the idea. But I wanted to be the antithesis of expectation. I wanted be joyous and full of spirit, I wanted Death to be the most alive character I’ve ever played…
