Viola Davis Interview – Fences – “I had to dream big to distract myself from the rats in the room, the rats in the walls”

Viola Davis has a theory as to her current Hollywood success and why she finds herself playing a string of roles that exude stoic strength in The Help, Doubt, Prisoners, How To Get Away with Murder and her latest movie, Fences.

Q: The Globe win, a proud moment?

DAVIS: …. She’s always there in my mind, dreaming about a future, a big future that seemed so impossible. But it’s what I had to do in order to get out of bed in the morning. I had to dream big to distract myself from my surrounds, the rats in the room, the rats in the walls. Dreaming kept my spirit alive.
