Stars & Their Supercars

In the world of A-list automobiles, it’s essential to make a statement when choosing which money-no-object motor will take pride of place in your garage…

Hugh Grant may be considered the epitome of a classy Brit, but his vehicular tastes appear to be far more European than the clipped enunciation and foppish charm that made him a household name and Hollywood heavyweight.
His pride and joy remains the stunning Ferrari California convertible that was bought as a gift to himself on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Built entirely out of light-weight aluminium, the California is powered by a twin-turbocharged, direct-injected 3.9-liter V8 engine that allows for a phenomenal top speed of 196 mph.

The Ferrari California is a far cry from pre-fame Grant’s first car, a Citroën Dyane, which he describes as “a very pathetic car with the power of one child pulling it by harness.” Nowadays, the California provides a mode of transport more befitting of Grant’s A-list stature, and the star remains infatuated with “the bang-bang noise of the engine when downshifting.”

Despite his often prickly past with regards to the prying lens of the paparazzi, it’s fair to assume that Grant’s gun-metal California certainly turns heads whenever the 56-year-old decides to take it for a spin.

For a girl who grew up in working-class Puerto Rican family in New York’s tough Bronx neighbourhood, Jennifer Lopez has enjoyed one of the most successful careers of any female entertainer – even becoming the first woman to have a number one album, J.Lo, and film, The Wedding Planner, in the same week.

The 47-year-old superstar has long been hailed as a fashion icon, and her impeccable taste also extends to her car collection, with the beautiful singer and actress owning an incredible white Bentley Continental GTC convertible.

As well as falling in love with the “very smooth ride” that the Bentley offers – which especially comes in handy while J-Lo ferries twins Emme and Max around L.A – the gleaming vehicle also boasts a massive 590 horsepower, and a top speed of around 200mph, ensuring that the pop queen always has an element of showbiz to her, even when negotiating traffic.

Simon Cowell has very exacting standards, a fact made abundantly clear over the years as the blunt-spoken head judge on some of telly’s most popular reality shows. As well as having an eye for finding the next big thing in the world of show business, Cowell is no slouch when it comes to choosing the finer things in life.

Perhaps the best example of this is his Jaguar Eagle Speedster. As well as combining a top speed of around 160 mph with hand-crafted aluminium elegance, the Jaguar Eagle Speedster is arguably one of the most beautiful automobiles on Earth.

The Eagle is just the latest in a long line of Jags for super-fan Cowell, bringing an undeniable X Factor to a garage that already houses an E-type classic, an F-type and two XK models.

With good looks, a beautiful wife and a glittering career, it seems that George Clooney has done a pretty good job at carving out his own niche as one of Hollywood’s biggest names. His choice of supercar, however, draws a link back to the successes of his father, Nick, who originally owned the gorgeous 1959 Chevrolet Corvette that Clooney Jr. still frequently uses.

Despite also owning a garage packed to the rafters with beautiful vehicles of both the two-wheeled and four-wheeled variety – including a Lexus and a number of Harley-Davidsons – the actor’s vintage Chevvy is sure to take pride of place in his collection.

News anchor Nick Clooney purchased the red-and-white roadster the year that it hit the mark, and was considered to be at the cutting-edge of the American automobile industry. George subsequently had the car restored to perfection, and cuts a suave figure behind the wheel of a car as iconic as this.

As one of the biggest music moguls of all time, and one half of the world’s biggest celebrity super-couple, it’s only fitting perhaps that Jay Z should own one of the most expensive cars on earth – the magnificent Maybach Exelero. This incredible automobile was first associated with Shawn Carter when it took centre-stage in the rapper’s ‘Lost Ones’ video, alongside friend and long-time collaborator Kanye West.

The concept for the Exelero was first brought about in order to road-test tires for manufacturer Fulda, but despite weighing in at a massive 2.6 tonnes, the car still manages to max out at an impressive 220 mph, and combines the elegance of a limousine with the sleek power of a sports coupe.

The Exelero remains so exclusive that it appears no-one really knows how many of these incredible cars have been made, but each one certainly lives up to its Latin name, which combines ‘eccelso’, meaning sublime, and ‘accelero’, or acceleration, for an incredible, unique combination of power and prestige.

Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t just an Academy Award winner and one of Hollywood’s top leading men, he’s also a dedicated and outspoken advocate for environmentalism. Whilst his colleagues and peers tend to gravitate towards gas-guzzling supercars, DiCaprio’s garage reflects his desire to do his bit for the planet – with the Tesla Roadster taking main stage amongst a plethora of eco-friendly speedsters, including a hybrid Toyota Prius and an aptly-named Frisker Karma.

The Roadster, however, is the most elite of electric cars, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in an astonishingly quick 3 seconds and reportedly running for 380 km on a single charge of its cutting-edge lithium batteries.
Of course, when you are both a cinematic legend and on a mission to improve awareness of the planet’s plight, a Tesla Roadster is the perfect vehicle to save the world in A-list style.

A lover of the Rolls Royce brand, former football superstar David Beckham has an impressive array of other exotic cars in his over-flowing garage – including an Audi S8, a Porsche Turbo Cabriolet, a Cadillac Escalad, a customised Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, and a Jeep Wrangler.

These days, however, his car of choice is the Rolls Royce Ghost, a successor to his previous Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead. The Ghost, now produced in a Series II version, boasts a 6.6-liter turbocharged V-12 engine that produces a massive 563 horsepower. An 8-speed automatic gearbox allows for the smoothest drive of possibly any car available, staying true to the Rolls Royce marque.

Incredibly for a car that houses a V-12 under the hood, the Ghost stays true to its name by only emitting a slight hum at low speeds, making it the perfect vehicle for city-dwellers. Out on the open road, however, the BMW-designed engine delivers the kind of Germanic thrusts that will satisfy even the most hardened of automotive aficionado.
